ICARUS: a case study into the mechanics of dynamic sculptures. Influenced by the work of Dutch artist Theo Jansen, this Californian “strandbeest” currently rests as a mere “proof-of-mechanical-concept” to ultimately be housed within a larger aquatic sculpture.  ICARUS is constructed out of several prefabricated acrylic webs, strung across two opposing metal bolts, and is operated by turning the parent gear in its prescribed direction. When operated, ICARUS’s wings flap, rotating sequentially in order to propel the future “vessel” into the pilots desired direction.
